I have a Goodtime Deluxe coming, and I am considering some 'improvements'. I already have the Bart Veerman bridge recommended by JDMC, and am thinking of either a Deering black head or the Deering prismatic head. Anyone notice any tonal difference with either head? Also, I want to upgrade to planetary tuners. Does anyone know the size of the hole in the headstock? Thanks! 'I'll fix it! Bring me a hammer and some duct tape.' timmo_1949 - Posted - 05/30/2006: 11:59:41 You can visit my webpage at http://savethebanjos.com and see what I and other folks have done. The holes for the factory guitar-type tuners are about 1/4'. There are NO, repeat, NO planetary tuners that will fit those holes. Most need a 3/8' hole. Timmo http://savethebanjos.com 'Bother Yum-Yum!' BANJO TONY - Posted - 05/31/2006: 08:24:39 you can also put on an OME arm rest,I think they sell for around $45.00 from OME. & you can put in a JLS # 12 tone ring got mine from Janent Davis made it sound MUCH better than the steel ring!. Steve Flint, MI mountainwoman - Posted - 02/10/2007: 10:19:15 Banjo Tony - Can you put that OME armrest on a Deering Good Time 2 as well? I find the armrest that came with the Good Time 2 to be very uncomfortable, and I wish Deering would change that design, even if it increased the cost a little. Is there a Deering armrest part that would fit the Good Time 2? Thanks. Jean bobdenver1961 - Posted - 02/10/2007: 12:11:34 I put a OME armrest on my Goodtimes 2. Wow what a difference. I hated that Vega style that came with it. It cut into my arm. GoodTimes are great little banjos. I owned one, and it served its purpose well in my life. If you want a better banjo, why not buy something different?. The type of upgrades you mention can bring the cost of those to close to the price of your banjo. After you're done upgrading it, you're ultimately left with a .....GoodTime banjo. Wouldn't you be better off buying a better banjo to begin with? A bridge could be a good thing, but $80+ tuners (when the stock ones should work fine) would put it over the top for me.
Either buy the GoodTime for what it is or save up for a different banjo IMHO. Scott |
